This study is part of a research project supervised by Dr. Yun Huang from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, School of Information Sciences.
Summary
This research study explores how you would utilize an interface to express and reason possible causal relationships within a dataset. We will introduce you the concept of causal relationship and the interface in our study, then ask you to interact with the interface and answer some questions. The total anticipated duration of the study is about 1 hour.
Before you may participate, you must provide informed consent indicating that you
- understand the procedure;
- allow us to make audio and screen recording during the interview (you do NOT need to turn on your camera; the data is collected for transcription and analysis purposes and will be kept anonymous);
- give your consent voluntarily (that is, participate because you want to); and
- know that you can withdraw your consent at any time.
Inclusion Criteria
Participants in this study must
- be age 18 or older,
- have received training in Data Science, Economics, or other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) fields,
- have applied regressions in data analysis projects.
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to learn how people reason about causal relationships and interact with the proposed interface.
Procedures
In this study, you will first complete tutorials about the concept of causal relationships and the interface. You will have time to get familiar with the tool in a practice task. Then, you will perform tasks using the system and finally answer questions about your experience.
Remuneration
You will be paid $10 after you complete the task.
Potential Risks and Benefits
The risks involved are no greater than those involved in daily activities. The research will result in a better understanding of the concepts of causal relationships within the provided context.
Will my study-related information be kept confidential?
Yes, but not always. In general, we will not tell anyone any information about you. Your de-identified information could be used for future research without additional informed consent. When this research is discussed or published, no one will know that you were in the study. However, laws and university rules might require us to disclose information about you. For example, if required by laws or University Policy, study information which identifies you and the consent form signed by you may be seen or copied by the following people or groups:
- The university committee and office that reviews and approves research studies, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Office for Protection of Research Subjects;
-
University and state auditors, and Departments of the university responsible for oversight of research
Participant Rights
- Your participation in this study is voluntary. You do not have to be in this study if you do not want to be.
- You have the right to change your mind and leave the study at any time without giving any reason and without penalty.
- You have the right to change your mind and leave the study at any time without giving any reason and without penalty.
